

Dr. Ma’ruf, a lecturer at the Management Department, Faculty of Economics and Business Universitas Andalas, attended the mid-term Co-Design for Sustainable, Resilient and Inclusive Public Spaces and Services workshop from 24-26 February 2023 in Mercure Sanur hotel, Bali. This program is conducted by Lund University and the Raoul Wallenberg Institute of Human Rights and Humanitarian Law (RWI), Sweden. Lund University is ranked 12th in 2023 by QS University World Ranking for sustainability.
The Co-Design for Sustainable, Resilient and Inclusive Public Spaces and Services program focuses on increasing municipal officials’ capacity to co-design inclusive public environments and services and aims to contribute to improving service provisions with a focus on both the physical and digital public environment. The program, which is designed of a combination of training and project, started in September 2022 and will be finished in April 2023, involving 32 participants from Turkey, North Macedonia and Indonesia. Dr. Ma’ruf, join the program as a member of Pariaman city team, where the other members are: Dr. Genius Umar, the city major of Pariaman; Dr. Firman Syakri Pribadi, an expert in tourism and lecturer at West Sumatra University and Mr. Yovan Syarif, an architect who involve in development on public space in Pariaman.
Co-design project in Pariaman city focuses on re-designing Lapangan Merdeka as a municipal public service. In this project, the team implements a participatory development method by involving a different group of citizens which as stakeholders of Lapangan Merdeka in re-designing this public space to become inclusive, resilient and sustainable, in accordance to SDG number 11: Sustainable city and communities. During the workshop in Bali, Pariaman team reported the progress of the project by presenting the result of participatory method. Three main activities have been conducted: Drawing competition for elementary and junior school students, opinion competition for senior high school student and focus group discussion for other stakeholders of Lapangan Merdeka. Post of this mid-term workshop, the team will proceed with the preparation of the final report and final conference in April 2023. The result of the project will be a policy recommendation for Pariaman city government to re-design Lapangan Merdeka to be an inclusive, resilient and sustainable public space.
